History of the X290

The GLC X290 generation revolutionized Mercedes-Benz's compact SUV offerings with contemporary design language and technological innovation.

Introduced at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the X290 replaced the first-generation GLC and adopted a more aggressive, modern aesthetic with improved interior quality. It quickly became a commercial success, establishing Mercedes-Benz as a leader in the competitive compact luxury SUV segment.

The model underwent a mid-cycle refresh in 2019, featuring updated exterior styling, a new infotainment system with larger displays, and enhanced driver assistance features. This update maintained its market competitiveness against rivals like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

Production of the X290 ended in 2023 as Mercedes-Benz transitioned to the next-generation platform, with approximately 2.1 million units built across all variants and markets. The GLC became one of the marque's best-selling models, contributing significantly to overall brand sales performance.
